Overview
Mkomazi National Park sits in northeastern Tanzania, bordering Kenya\’s Tsavo West National Park and forming part of one of East Africa\’s largest contiguous wilderness areas. Far less visited than the northern circuit\’s famous parks, Mkomazi is a genuine hidden gem β semi-arid savanna, scattered acacia and baobab, and the Pare and Usambara Mountains rising along the horizon.
The park is best known for its black rhino sanctuary, a fenced, closely protected breeding program for this critically endangered species, alongside successful reintroduction programs for African wild dog and cheetah. For travelers who want an authentic, off-the-beaten-path safari without the crowds of the Serengeti or Ngorongoro, Mkomazi delivers.
Wildlife
- Black rhino β protected within a dedicated sanctuary inside the park
- African wild dog and cheetah β both part of long-running reintroduction programs
- Elephant, giraffe, oryx, gerenuk, and other dry-country specialists
- Excellent birdlife, including several dry-savanna species scarce elsewhere in northern Tanzania
Best Time to Visit
JuneβOctober (dry season) offers the best game viewing as wildlife concentrates around permanent water sources. The park is far less crowded than the northern circuit year-round, so even the wetter months offer rewarding, uncrowded game drives.
Activities
- Game drives across open savanna and acacia woodland
- Black rhino sanctuary visits (subject to ranger availability and advance arrangement)
- Birding, particularly strong for dry-country specialist species
Park Fees
TANAPA entry fees apply per person, per 24-hour period, and are included in full within any Let\’s Wander Tanzania quote featuring Mkomazi.
Climate
Hot and dry for much of the year, typical of Tanzania\’s semi-arid northeastern lowlands; the short and long rains bring a brief flush of green but rarely disrupt travel.
How to Get There
Mkomazi is roughly a 3β4 hour drive from Arusha or Moshi, making it a realistic addition to a Northern Circuit itinerary for travelers who have already visited the more famous parks, or a rewarding standalone short safari in its own right.
