Overview
\\n
Lake Natron is a shallow, caustic soda lake in the Gregory Rift, its waters colored deep red and orange by salt-loving microorganisms and often rimmed with a crust of white mineral salts. Overlooked by the still-active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai (\”Mountain of God\” in Maasai), it\\\’s one of the most starkly beautiful and least-visited landscapes in northern Tanzania β a destination for travelers seeking something far removed from the classic safari circuit.

Wildlife
\\n
Lake Natron is one of the only regular breeding sites in East Africa for lesser flamingo, with tens of thousands sometimes gathering on the lake. The surrounding dry country supports gazelle, zebra, and other arid-adapted wildlife, though this is a scenery and adventure destination rather than a big-game one.

Best Time to Visit
\\n
The dry season (JuneβOctober) offers the easiest road access; flamingo numbers vary through the year depending on breeding conditions, so timing for birdlife is best confirmed closer to your travel dates.

Park Fees
\\n
A conservation/community fee applies rather than a national park fee, included in full in any itinerary featuring Lake Natron.
\\n\’, \’
Climate
\\n
Hot and arid, often significantly warmer than the northern Serengeti or Ngorongoro given its lower elevation in the Rift Valley β light, breathable clothing and strong sun protection are essential.
\\n\’, \’
How to Get There
\\n
Roughly a 3β4 hour drive from Arusha or the Ngorongoro area on rough, remote roads β best combined with a 4×4 safari itinerary rather than visited as a standalone day trip. We include this in our more adventurous, off-the-beaten-path itineraries.
