About Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro is a collapsed volcano whose steep walls enclose a self-contained world of grassland, swamp, forest and soda lake. Around 25,000 large animals live on the crater floor, including lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, hyenas and one of the best places in Tanzania to see the endangered black rhino.

A visit usually means a full day: descend early, enjoy a picnic lunch by the hippo pool, and climb back to the rim by mid-afternoon. The wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area also includes Olduvai Gorge, Ndutu and Maasai communities, so it works well as a stop between Karatu and the Serengeti.

Quick answer: best time

Wildlife is in the crater all year, so Ngorongoro is a good choice in any month. For the clearest views and easiest roads, go June to October. From March to May expect rain, mist and fewer vehicles. Mornings on the rim are cold, especially July and August.

Top months: Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct
