About Tarangire National Park

Tarangire is a favourite first stop on the Northern Circuit, famed for giant baobab trees and large elephant herds. In the dry season the Tarangire River is the only permanent water for miles, so elephants, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, giraffe and antelope gather in huge numbers.

It is also excellent for birding, with more than 500 species recorded, and for lions, leopards and the rare tree-climbing pythons. Its location, about two hours from Arusha, makes it the easiest first day of a safari after a flight or a night in town.

Quick answer: best time

The best time for Tarangire is the dry season, June to October, when animals crowd along the river. From November to May the park is green with migrant birds and fewer vehicles, though thick vegetation can hide some wildlife and the April to May rains can make tracks wet.

Top months: Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct
