Your 5-day itinerary

Every day can be adjusted to your pace and to where the herds are. Your written quote confirms the final plan.

  1. Day 1
    Arusha or Moshi to Karatu

Your driver-guide collects you from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi after breakfast and talks you through the plan. Drive to Karatu (about 3 to 4 hours) along the edge of the Great Rift Valley, through Maasai country and past Lake Manyara. Arrive with time to settle in, rest and get ready for the Serengeti.

Overnight Eileen's Trees Inn, Karatu · Meals Lunch and dinner

  2. Day 2
    Karatu to the Serengeti

An early start for the highlight of the trip. Climb through the Ngorongoro Highlands and pass Oldupai Gorge, famous for early human fossils, then drop onto the open Serengeti plains with game viewing all the way to Yellow Barbet Tented Camp, Ikoma. Picnic lunch on the road. You may well spot your first lions, zebra and wildebeest before you arrive.

Overnight Yellow Barbet Tented Camp, Ikoma · Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  3. Day 3
Serengeti game drive: Ikoma plains and woodlands

Spend the day on the plains and woodlands of the western Serengeti around Ikoma, where herds pass through the western corridor, usually around June and July. Look for lion, hyena, giraffe and the odd leopard in the Ikoma woodlands. Picnic lunch in the bush. At camp you can also ask about a walking safari with a park ranger or a night game drive (extra fees may apply).

Overnight Yellow Barbet Tented Camp, Ikoma · Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  4. Day 4
    Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater

A last morning game drive in the Serengeti, then climb out through the Ngorongoro Highlands. Descend about 600 metres onto the crater floor for a half-day game drive: lions, elephants, hippos, buffalo and one of the best chances in Tanzania to see black rhino. Picnic lunch by the hippo pool, then up to Eileen's Trees Inn, Karatu for the night.

Overnight Eileen's Trees Inn, Karatu · Meals Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  5. Day 5
    Karatu to Arusha or Moshi

Slow breakfast, then an optional Maasai or coffee-farm visit in Karatu, arranged on request. Drive back to Arusha or Moshi (about 3 to 4 hours), arriving in the afternoon for drop-off at your hotel or Kilimanjaro Airport.
