Best Time to Visit Tanzania: A Month-by-Month Guide

Tanzania rewards visitors year-round, but what you\’ll see changes significantly by season. Here\’s a realistic month-by-month breakdown to help you choose your travel dates.

December – March: Calving Season

The Great Migration herds gather on the short-grass plains around Ndutu and the southern Serengeti, and between roughly late January and mid-March, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest give birth within a few concentrated weeks — drawing intense predator activity. Weather is warm and mostly dry, with short rains typically easing off by December.

April – May: Long Rains

The quietest and wettest months. Some camps close, and certain roads become more difficult, but rates drop significantly and the landscape turns lush and green. Not the best window for a first safari, but a good option for budget-conscious, flexible travelers.

June – October: Dry Season

The classic safari season and our most-booked window. Wildlife concentrates around permanent water sources, making game viewing highly reliable across Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and the Serengeti. From around July, the migration herds move into the northern Serengeti and across into Kenya\’s Masai Mara, with Mara River crossings — one of nature\’s most dramatic spectacles — typically occurring July through October.

November: Short Rains

Usually brief afternoon showers rather than all-day rain, with the migration herds beginning their move back south toward Ndutu. A good shoulder-season option — greener scenery, fewer vehicles, and generally lower rates than peak dry season.

Kilimanjaro Climbing Seasons

January–March and June–October offer the clearest skies and driest trails for a Kilimanjaro climb. The April–May and November rainy periods make for a wetter, more technical climb and are generally best avoided.

Zanzibar

June–October and December–February are generally the driest, most popular months for a beach stay. March–May brings the long rains and quieter beaches at lower prices.
