Visa requirements are one of the most common questions we get before a trip. Here\’s a clear overview — though we always recommend confirming the latest requirements for your specific nationality with the nearest Tanzanian embassy or consulate before you travel, since immigration policy can change.
Do I Need a Visa?
Most nationalities require a visa to enter Tanzania, including the UK, most of the EU, the US, and Canada. A small number of countries have visa-free or visa-on-arrival-only arrangements — check your specific nationality on the Tanzania Immigration Department\’s official website before applying.
The eVisa
The easiest route for most travelers is Tanzania\’s online eVisa system, applied for in advance through the official Immigration Department portal. We recommend applying at least two to three weeks before your travel date to allow for processing time, though it\’s sometimes approved faster.
- You\’ll need a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates, a passport-style photo, and your travel itinerary details
- Payment is made online during the application
- Approval is sent by email — print or save a digital copy to show on arrival
Visa on Arrival
Some nationalities can still obtain a visa on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, Julius Nyerere International Airport (Dar es Salaam), Zanzibar\’s Abeid Amani Karume Airport, or major land borders — but this can mean longer queues, and we generally recommend the eVisa where it\’s available to you for a smoother arrival.
East Africa Tourist Visa
If your itinerary includes both Kenya and Tanzania (as several of our Great Migration itineraries do), the East Africa Tourist Visa covers Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda on a single visa and is usually the simplest option for a multi-country trip — it\’s applied for online in a similar way to the standard eVisa.
Zanzibar
Zanzibar is part of the United Republic of Tanzania, so your Tanzania visa covers travel there too — but you\’ll go through a separate immigration check on arrival in Zanzibar, even when connecting from the mainland.
Let us know your nationality when you book and we\’re happy to point you toward the specific requirements that apply to you.
