A short flight (roughly 1–1.5 hours) puts you directly at an airstrip near the park itself, so more of your trip is spent actually on safari rather than in a vehicle.

Option 2: The Road Transfer (Being Honest With You)
It\’s technically possible to reach parks like Mikumi by road via a ferry or flight to Dar es Salaam and then several hours of driving. We won\’t pretend this is a good use of your limited holiday time — for most of our northern circuit parks (Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti), the road option from Zanzibar simply isn\’t practical, since it would mean the better part of two full days just in transit before you\’ve seen a single animal. We only recommend this route in unusual cases where flight availability is genuinely limited.
How Long Does It Actually Take?
Here\’s a realistic breakdown of what a fly-in day looks like, using Mikumi (the closest option) as an example:
- Early hotel pickup in Zanzibar
- Transfer to Zanzibar Airport
- Flight to the mainland airstrip (1–1.5 hours)
- Arrival, and straight into your first game drive
For parks further from the coast — Tarangire, Ngorongoro, or Ndutu — you\’ll fly into Arusha or a dedicated safari airstrip, then take a short additional drive (30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the park) to reach the park gate itself.
So, Can You Do a Same-Day Round Trip?
Honestly? Not comfortably. A genuine there-and-back-in-one-day safari from Zanzibar to somewhere like Tarangire or Ngorongoro would mean a 4 or 5 a.m. start and getting back well after dark, with very little actual time in the park to show for it. We don\’t offer this as a standard package for exactly that reason — it isn\’t the kind of experience we\’d want to put our name on. What we do recommend instead is at minimum an overnight trip (2 days, 1 night), which gives you a proper afternoon game drive on arrival and a full morning the next day before flying back.
