Planning a first safari raises a lot of practical questions. Here are clear answers to the ones we hear most from travellers.

Do I need a visa for Tanzania?

Most visitors can get a visa on arrival for about $50 per person in cash, and some nationalities can apply for an e-visa online before travelling. Rules can change, so check the official immigration website for your nationality before you fly. See our Tanzania visa guide.

What vaccinations do I need?

A yellow fever certificate is required if you arrive from a country with yellow fever risk, and malaria prevention is strongly recommended. Please speak to your doctor or a travel clinic well before you travel.

Is it safe to go on safari in Tanzania?

Northern Tanzania is considered very safe for tourists. As anywhere, use normal travel common sense. Your guide looks after you throughout the trip.

How much should I tip?

A driver-guide and crew are usually tipped about $15 to $20 per person per day. Bring clean US dollar bills.

How far in advance should I book?

For June to October and the festive season, book 6 to 12 months ahead because the best camps and dates fill quickly. Quieter months need less notice.

What currency should I bring?

Bring clean US dollar bills for tips, park fees and extras, plus some Tanzanian shillings. ATMs are reliable mainly in Arusha.

When is the best time to go?

June to October is the best all-round period. January to March is best for calving, and late July to September for river crossings. See our best time to visit Tanzania guide.

Are all trips private?

Yes, our trips run with your own vehicle and guide, so you set the pace. Group-joining options are available on selected dates if you prefer a lower price.

What does a safari cost?
