Tanzania Family Safari: Planning Guide for Parents

Best age, child-friendly parks, travel times, health advice and pacing for a family safari.

A family safari in Tanzania works best when the trip is shaped around your children. Here is what parents ask us most. See also our Tanzania family safari holidays page.

What age is best?

Many families find children from about 6 or 7 enjoy it most because they can sit through a game drive and remember what they saw. Younger children can come too, with shorter drives and breaks. Lodges set their own age rules, so tell us how old your children are when you enquire.

Which parks work best?

Tarangire has elephants and baobabs, and Ngorongoro Crater has many animals in a small space. The Serengeti has longer drives, so it suits older children. See Tarangire and Ngorongoro.

Travel times to plan around

Zanzibar to Arusha by air takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. Arusha to Tarangire is about 2 to 2.5 hours by road, and Tarangire to the Ngorongoro area about 1.5 to 2 hours. Plan breaks and snacks.

Pacing

Choose one main game drive a day with a midday break, and a lodge with a pool. Bring books, snacks and binoculars for each child.

Health and booking

Speak to your doctor or a travel clinic early about vaccines and malaria prevention. For school holidays in the dry season and the festive period, book 6 to 12 months ahead.

Our family itinerary

The Best Family Safari in Tanzania, 5 days is listed from $5,234. You can add Zanzibar beach days afterwards, see the complete holiday guide.
