Tanzania Family Safari Holidays, Planned Privately
A good family safari is planned around the children, not around a checklist. Because every Let’s Wander trip is private, you choose when to start, when to stop and when to head back for the pool. Below are realistic travel times, the parks that work best with kids, and the family trips we already run.

Tarangire has big elephant herds and baobab trees, and animals are often close to the road. Ngorongoro Crater packs a lot of wildlife into a small area, so you see plenty without long drives. The Serengeti is spectacular but has longer drives, so we suggest it for older children or for a slower trip. See our guides to Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti.
Realistic travel times
These are the times we use in our own itineraries. A flight from Zanzibar to Arusha takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. Arusha Airport to Tarangire is about 2 to 2.5 hours by road, and Tarangire to the Ngorongoro area is about 1.5 to 2 hours. Plan breaks and snacks for the longer drives, and ask us to keep driving days short for younger children.
Family safaris we run
The Best Family Safari in Tanzania, 5 days is our kid-friendly itinerary, listed from $5,234. For beach families, the 2-day safari from Zanzibar (from $998 per person) is a light first safari, and the 10-day Tanzania and Zanzibar safari (from €1,888) combines wildlife and beach. For a relaxed island week, see the 7-day Zanzibar adventure.
Family day trips from Moshi
If you are staying in Moshi, the Chemka hot springs (from $70 per person) and a Marangu village visit suit most ages, according to our Moshi day trip page. Materuni waterfall (from $40 per person) and the Kilimanjaro day hike involve steeper paths, so tell us your children’s ages and walking experience first.
Planning questions parents ask
Speak to your doctor or a travel clinic early about vaccines and malaria prevention. Lodges set their own age rules, so tell us how old your children are when you enquire. Read the full planning guide for parents, and see the best time to visit for school-holiday months.

Frequently asked questions
What age is best for a Tanzania safari?
Many families find children from about 6 or 7 enjoy it most, but younger children can come with shorter drives and breaks. Lodges set their own age rules, which we check for you.
Is the safari private?
Yes. You have your own vehicle and driver-guide, so you control the pace.
Can we add Zanzibar?
Yes. Many families finish with beach days. See the 10-day Tanzania and Zanzibar safari or ask for a tailored plan.
How much does a family safari cost?
The 5-day family itinerary is listed from $5,234. The price depends on group size, lodges and dates, and each quote lists what is included.
When should we book?
For June to October and the festive period, book 6 to 12 months ahead. Quieter months need less notice.
