Moshi or Arusha: Which Town Should You Choose for Your Tanzania Trip in 2026?
Moshi or Arusha: where should you base your Tanzania trip?
Both towns work well. This is an honest local comparison, so you can pick the base that suits your trip.
The short answer
Choose Moshi if…
You are climbing Kilimanjaro, want a calmer start, or enjoy farms, waterfalls and village life. Moshi is small, walkable and sits right below the mountain.
Choose Arusha if…
Your trip is mostly safari and you want the widest choice of hotels, restaurants and services. The parks are closer, so there is less driving on arrival and departure days.
Can’t decide?
Kilimanjaro Airport sits between the two towns, about 45 to 60 minutes from each. Many guests spend a night in each. Tell us your plans and we will suggest what fits.

| Day trips | Materuni Waterfalls, coffee farms, Chemka hot spring, Chagga villages | Arusha National Park, Lake Duluti, Maasai cultural visits |
| Hotels and food | Fewer options, but enough for a comfortable stay | Widest choice, from budget to high end |
| Best for | Climbers, culture, a slower start | Short safaris, first-time visitors, early park starts |
How your base affects the safari
Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro are closer to Arusha, so starting from Moshi usually adds one to two hours of driving on the first and last day. Many guests happily accept this for a quieter start and a mountain view at breakfast. Others spend the first or last night in Arusha. We collect guests from either town and plan the route around your choice.
Our honest recommendation
- Climbing first, safari after: base yourself in Moshi for the climb, rest for a day, then we collect you for the parks.
- A safari of three or four days: Arusha saves time, because the parks are closer.
- Safari plus local culture: either town works. Add Materuni waterfall and a coffee farm from Moshi, or a cultural visit near Arusha.
- Arriving late at night: sleep near the airport side of your choice and start fresh in the morning.
