A little preparation makes a northern Tanzania trip smoother. These are the points guests ask us about most.
Visa
Most visitors can get a visa on arrival for about $50 per person in cash, and some nationalities can apply for an e-visa online. One Tanzania tourist visa also covers Zanzibar. Rules change, so see our visa guide and the official immigration site.
Health
A yellow fever certificate is required if you arrive from a country with yellow fever risk, and malaria prevention is strongly recommended. Speak to your doctor or travel clinic before you travel.
Money and tips
Bring clean US dollar bills for tips, park fees and extras, plus some Tanzanian shillings. ATMs are reliable only in Arusha. A driver-guide and crew are usually tipped about $15 to $20 per person per day.
Weather and packing
The Ngorongoro rim is cold in the early morning, so bring a warm layer. See the best time to visit.
Booking and base
For June to October and the festive period, book 6 to 12 months ahead. Not sure where to stay? Read Moshi or Arusha and how to get from Kilimanjaro Airport to Moshi.
Safety
Northern Tanzania is considered very safe for tourists. Use normal travel common sense, and your guide looks after you throughout.
